If you struggle to clearly set and achieve your goals\u2014\u200awhether personally or professionally\u200a\u2014\u200ayou\u2019re not alone. You\u2019re human.<\/p>\n

My first job out of college taught me the real value of setting strategic goals. But it wasn\u2019t until I studied business that I learned that there\u2019s a proven process<\/strong> for designing goals that are clear <\/em>and actionable<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Now, as a creative business owner, I\u2019ve realized how important it is to use this process when setting goals. I no longer have supervisors checking in, so this gives me the structure I need.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve put together a combination of what I\u2019ve learned from business coaching, professional development, and work experience. Thankfully, these methods weren\u2019t designed for the perfectly disciplined, productive, or focused person. This advice is for everyone\u200a\u2014\u200aespecially those of us who love big ideas and goals.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a breakdown for how to set killer goals as a small creative business\u2014and how to actually achieve them:<\/p>\n

1. Envision your ideal business and life.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

For some people, generating ideas and talking about the bigger vision comes naturally. For others (like me), it\u2019s easy to get lost in the details and forget to take a step back.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s the first step\u2014take a step back and remove yourself from the daily grind. Where are you going? What is your purpose? Why are you doing what you\u2019re doing? Is this really what you want, or have you been building a business you don\u2019t really love?<\/p>\n

As small business owners, we can spend so much time hustling to get new clients (and taking care of the ones we have) that we lose sight of why we started working for ourselves in the first place.<\/p>\n

Envisioning your ideal business and life is important to do before creating your actual goals. Otherwise, you risk wasting time moving in the wrong direction and working towards something that feels empty and inauthentic.<\/p>\n

2. Break your vision into goals.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Once you\u2019ve figured out a clear idea of where you\u2019re going, break it down into long- and short-term goals. Short-term goals<\/em> refer to ones you want or need to accomplish within the next year. Long-term goals<\/em> are ones you\u2019re planning for more than a year out.<\/p>\n

This helps you determine your priorities and take an honest look at your goals. Are you trying to do too much within the next year? Are you focusing on what\u2019s most important? Do you need to adjust how you spend your time?<\/p>\n

I also recommend reviewing these goals quarterly and annually. This gives you an opportunity to move timelines, shift directions, or drop items off the list.<\/p>\n

3. Make them SMART.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

I used to have many unfinished goals each year until I finally realized one important lesson:<\/p>\n

The way <\/em>we write our goals has a huge impact on whether or not we reach them<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A widely accepted best practice for writing goals is called \u201cSMART\u201d. The process works with our psychology so we have the best chance of understanding, remembering, and achieving our goals. It clarifies our goals and creates accountability.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve never done this before, it might feel awkward and difficult. It\u2019s taken me years of practice to make it feel more natural. But as you spend time in this process, the results are awesome goals that you can actually accomplish.<\/p>\n

How to write SMART goals<\/strong><\/h2>\n

SMART stands for Specific<\/strong>, Measurable<\/strong>, Achievable<\/strong>, Relevant<\/strong>, and Time-Bound<\/strong>. Each goal you write should match every one of these criteria<\/em> to maximize its effectiveness.<\/p>\n

For example, if your goal is to \u201cget more clients\u201d, there is very little chance you will be successful. The goal doesn\u2019t have much power and clarity to it.<\/p>\n

However, here\u2019s how you can use the SMART process to make it a killer goal.<\/p>\n

Specific<\/h3>\n

Be specific about what you\u2019re trying to do.<\/p>\n

Original: Get more clients.<\/p>\n

New: Get more branding <\/strong>clients.<\/em><\/p>\n

Measurable<\/h3>\n

Make sure it\u2019s measurable, so you can know definitively if you\u2019ve been successful in reaching your goal.<\/p>\n

New: Get five <\/strong>more branding clients.<\/em><\/p>\n

Achievable<\/h3>\n

Consider whether your goal is actually achievable. Is it reasonable to try and get five <\/em>new branding clients?<\/p>\n

New: Get three new <\/strong>branding clients.<\/em><\/p>\n

Relevant<\/h3>\n

Make sure the goal is relevant in the larger vision of your business. Are you trying to expand your branding services, or do you really want to grow another area?<\/p>\n

New: Get three new long-term social media<\/strong> clients.<\/em><\/p>\n

Time-Bound<\/h3>\n

Give yourself a real deadline. Then you will know exactly what you need to accomplish and when.<\/p>\n

Final Version: Get three new long-term social media clients by March 1<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

You\u2019ve now clarified your original goal and made it far more powerful. Looking at your new goal, it\u2019s much easier to know which smaller steps will help you get there.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
