And the best\nway to set up your site for success from the start is to improve your SEO. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind, though,\nthat SEO is not a one-time job. Once you set up the groundwork, you\u2019ll still\nneed to work on it on a regular basis in order to stay relevant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know that all this\nSEO stuff can be daunting for many, so I\u2019m going to break it down into simple\nsteps to help get you started. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>SITEMAPS<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sitemaps help search\nengines find content on your site. They give hints to the search engines and\nhelp Google crawl your website. I know this sounds super techy, but it\u2019s\nextremely important for your SEO. Luckily for Squarespace users, you do not\nneed to create your own sitemap, because they have already done it for you! You\ncan access it by adding <strong>\/sitemap.xml <\/strong>to your main URL. For\nexample, https:\/\/martaraptis.com\/sitemap.xml.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, you still\nneed to submit your sitemap to Google to get your website indexed. Follow the\nsteps below to begin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If you\nhaven\u2019t already, first you\u2019ll need to <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/35179?hl=en\">verify your\nsite<\/a> with Google.<\/li><li>Next, from\nyour <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/webmasters\/tools\/home\">Google Search Console<\/a>,\nselect your primary website property on\nyour dashboard.&nbsp; <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>From the left-hand-side\n     menu, go to<strong> Crawl \u2192\n     Sitemaps<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Click the&nbsp;<strong>Add\/Test Sitemap<\/strong>&nbsp;button in the top right corner (red button). <\/li><li>After your domain name, add&nbsp;<strong>sitemap.xml&nbsp;<\/strong>and click&nbsp;<strong>Submit<\/strong>. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, you will want to submit your sitemap to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/toolbox\/webmaster\">Bing\nWebmaster Tools<\/a>. If you don\u2019t already have a Microsoft account,\nyou\u2019ll need to do that first. Then, follow the steps below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>First, you\u2019ll need to click on <strong>Add a Site<\/strong> on the left hand-side menu, then enter your URL. <\/li><li>When Bing asks you to <strong>Add a Sitemap<\/strong>, enter your domain name followed by \/sitemap.xml and\nclick <strong>Add<\/strong>. <\/li><li><strong>Verify your site ownership<\/strong> by copying the <strong>Meta Tag<\/strong> and pasting it into the header section of your website. (In\nSquarespace, click<em> Settings \u2192\nAdvanced \u2192 Code Injection \u2192 Header<\/em><em>.<\/em><em>)<\/em><em><\/em><\/li><li>Go back to Bing Webmasters and click on&nbsp;<strong>Verify<\/strong>.<em><\/em><\/li><li>From the menu on the left, go to <strong>Configure My Site \u2192 Sitemaps<\/strong>\nto review your listing. Then click on <strong>Submit\nURLs to submit your full website or individual pages. <\/strong><em><\/em><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>INDEXING<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The next thing you\u2019ll need to do is come back to your Google Search\nConsole and request indexing for your new content. It\u2019s a good idea to do this\nevery time you update your content on your website. If that\u2019s too much, try to\ndo it at least once a month or whatever you can manage. (<strong><em>Pro tip:<\/em><\/strong> Set up an ongoing\nmonthly reminder for yourself in your calendar.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here are the steps to index\nyour site: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. From your Search Console, select your primary website property in your dashboard.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. From the left-hand-side menu, go to<strong> Crawl \u2192 Fetch as Google<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is what you will see (with your own website URL): <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/SEO.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18167\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Leave it blank to submit your entire website. You can also submit individual pages down the road by adding a specific URL slug. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Click on the<strong> Fetch<\/strong> button with \u201cDesktop\u201d selected as shown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. Your site URL will now be listed below. Now, click on the <strong>Request Indexing<\/strong> button on the right hand-side. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6. Confirm that you\u2019re not a robot when the window pops up. Select <strong>Crawl this URL and its Direct Links&nbsp;<\/strong>if you submitted your whole website (or <strong>Crawl Only this URL<\/strong>&nbsp;if you submitted a single page).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7. Repeat the same steps, but this time using <strong>Mobile: Smartphone<\/strong>&nbsp;from the drop-down box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>SEARCH ENGINE DESCRIPTION<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you take the time to customize your Squarespace search engine description, it will make all the difference in how your site appears in Google search results. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The site description that comes up below my URL tells you\nright away what my business is all about and helps users determine if my site\nis worth clicking on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to customize your search engine description in\nSquarespace, follow these steps: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Log in to your Squarespace dashboard.<\/li><li>From the home menu on the left, click <strong>Settings<\/strong> <em>\u2192<\/em> <strong>SEO<\/strong>. <\/li><li>Enter your description and save. See my example below: <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/seo-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18168\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And just like that, you\u2019ve set up a great foundation for your website, thanks to these SEO basics.
