This classic (almost clich\u00e9) problem facing freelancers from all industries can <a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/solve-your-cash-flow-problem-with-these-3-steps\">cause major cash flow problems<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, if you\u2019ve been freelancing for long, I don\u2019t have to rub that painful truth in your face. You\u2019ve probably seen it all around you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some freelancers seem to rake in big money while others struggle month-to-month to find any consistency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some freelancers seem to always have more clients than they know what to do with, while others keep trying <a href=\"https:\/\/millo.co\/how-to-get-freelance-clients\">new tactics to get clients<\/a>\u2014and nothing ever seems to stick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re ready to pad your schedule (and your bank account) with more clients, booked out farther in advance, then it\u2019s time to take action on the advice you\u2019ll find in this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve compiled what has quickly grown to be a small masterclass on the art of booking clients out for months in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The advice comes from 16 friends of mine; fellow freelancers who have figured it out. Freelancers and entrepreneurs who know what it takes to get new clients, keep them coming back, and book out their schedules (and their revenue) for months into the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Advice from 16 freelancers who have figured it out<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For starters, my friend Jake built his company <a href=\"https:\/\/leadcookie.com\/\"><em>Lead Cookie<\/em><\/a> to $45,000\/mo. in less than a year. It\u2019s safe to say he knows a thing or two about getting (and keeping) clients.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Jake, it\u2019s all about consistency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Build consistency with marketing habits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Spend at least 30-60 minutes per day doing something to market yourself<\/strong>,\u201d Jake told me.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018what\u2019 matters less than the habit of working on your marketing every single day. Make marketing yourself a priority and do it every day. If you do that, your client pool will never run dry.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, Jake\u2019s on to building his second company, a <a href=\"https:\/\/contentallies.com\/\">content marketing agency<\/a>, using the same guiding principles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Finding consistency is key for freelance designer <a href=\"https:\/\/jilllynndesign.com\">Jill Anderson<\/a> too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>My #1 tip for booking clients months in advance is consistent content marketing<\/strong>,\u201d she recently explained to me.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I try to publish at least 2 blog posts a month. Then I send out a newsletter with a quick intro and links to my posts. My newsletter keeps me in touch with clients and prospects. And the consistent blogging keeps me in Google\u2019s good graces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Want to learn more about using email for content marketing? The big mistake most freelancers make is to stop marketing when they get a big project. Then when that project finishes, they have nothing in their diary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jake, Jill and Rob aren\u2019t the only ones who recommend focusing on better <a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/business-habits\">business habits<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talented financial planning freelancer Pamela of <a href=\"https:\/\/brunchandbudget.com\/\"><em>Brunch and Budget<\/em><\/a> told me the same thing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Set up and systematize regular business habits<\/strong> that you do no matter how many clients you have,\u201d Pamela advises.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat could be anything from going to networking events 1x\/week, posting on social media regularly, sending out a regular newsletter, etc.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Turn business habits into client-getting systems<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In many of my conversations with these experts, this idea of using habits and systems to book clients came up over and over again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I knew I personally had seen <a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/why-systems-improve-your-productivity-revenue-and-quality-of-life\">how leveraging systems can transform your business<\/a> and was pleased to see it was a common theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rob Allen is a freelance copywriter who has grown his services into a full-fledged <a href=\"https:\/\/kingsofconversion.com\/\">copywriting agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I met Rob when he challenged himself to book $5,000 worth of freelance writing clients within 30 days as a brand-new writer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only did he crush that goal, but he also booked himself out with client work for 6+ months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rob used a combination of well-crafted systems and high-value offerings to grow his business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I first started freelancing, I found myself susceptible to HUGE swings in income,\u201d Rob recently shared with me.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe only way I could break the cycle was to turn my freelancing &#8230; into a well-oiled machine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor my agency, that\u2019s meant dialing in our offering, customizing our pitch, automating our follow up, perfecting our <a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/client-onboarding\">client onboarding<\/a> and offboarding so that every client we come into contact with turns into a predictable amount of revenue and referrals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.reliablepenguin.com\/crm-for-freelancers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">systems in place,<\/a> Rob finally found the predictability that seems to elude so many freelancers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"banner banner--invoice\">\n<div class=\"banner__text-container\">\n<h2 class=\"banner__title\">Automate your <br>intake process<\/h2>\n<a class=\"banner__cta\" href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.reliablepenguin.com\/automations\">Learn More<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Automate your marketing efforts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Who wouldn\u2019t want to have a freelance business where new clients seek you out as if by magic every month?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know I would.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why I\u2019ve been fascinated as I\u2019ve made friends with a few freelancers who do just that: they use their <a href=\"https:\/\/millo.co\/portfolio-website\">portfolio website<\/a> as a constant source of new clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It happens almost on autopilot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/logogeek.uk\/\">Logo designer Ian Paget<\/a> gets more inquiries than he can take on in any given month and finally <a href=\"https:\/\/millo.co\/10-steps-to-becoming-a-successful-freelance-designer\">took his freelancing full-time<\/a> just recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn order to stand a chance of being booked months in advance, you need a steady flow of leads coming in,\u201d he advocates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy primary source of leads is Google. When people need a logo, they search for \u2018logo design\u2019 or \u2018logo designer\u2019 and thankfully I\u2019m lucky enough to be in the top results [in the UK].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo whilst it\u2019s a long term strategy, put as much time and energy as you can into learning and working on Search Engine Optimization so your website turns into a lead-generating machine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ian\u2019s not the only one pulling this off. I have been amazed to watch my friend <a href=\"https:\/\/mattolpinski.com\/\">Matt Olpinski<\/a> do the same thing with his website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy website is 100% responsible for keeping my project calendar booked months in advance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery decision about content and design is focused on getting more clients to find and contact me.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOver time, that strategic effort has put me on the first page of Google and I&#8217;m frequently turning down work for lack of availability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Identify and focus on the right kinds of clients<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, building all the systems in the world and bringing in leads on autopilot won\u2019t help you unless you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/3-ways-to-reach-your-ideal-client-through-instagram-stories\">attracting the right kinds of clients<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freelance designer <a href=\"https:\/\/brentgalloway.me\">Brent Galloway<\/a> has become a go-to t-shirt designer for some of the biggest names in music.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He agrees that dialing in your \u201cideal client\u201d is the best option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy secret to keeping a booked schedule has been finding clients who are in constant need of designs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow did I find these dream clients who are sending me new projects every week?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFirst, I defined what type of work I wanted to be known for and who I wanted to work with. After years of trying everything I discovered my obsession for designing t-shirts. So I built my entire brand and portfolio around it. Because I only show and share merch designs, that\u2019s the work I attract. This also gave me clarity on who I should be connecting with: clients who would be in regular need of merch designs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI got my foot in the door of the industry by <a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/6-cold-email-tips-i-use-to-turn-strangers-into-paying-clients\">sending cold-emails<\/a> introducing myself. Having a focused portfolio of merch designs helped lead to more replies. One project led to another and sharing completed projects helped me attract new clients.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m grateful and proud to now be in a position where I&#8217;ve worked with a handful of the same clients for over three years. And my client pool only continues to grow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesuccessfulblog.com\/consulting-and-coaching-for-creatives\/\">Mania Mavridou<\/a> follows this same philosophy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStand out and become an expert to attract your ideal clients. My secret to being booked in advance is to be sought-after, have systems in place and attract your ideal target group.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stay hyper-aware of current and future opportunities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Two freelancers I spoke with reinforced how important it is to stay aware of your current and future situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because <a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/three-steps-to-work-less-and-make-more\">a freelancer can wear so many different hats<\/a>, it takes real talent and effort to avoid getting distracted for days at a time (I know I\u2019m guilty of this) and letting your promotion and sales efforts run dry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lacroixcreative.com\/\">Patricia Lacroix<\/a> says, \u201cI keep my business at the forefront of my own mind, constantly. That way, I never miss an opportunity to bring up my business and how I might solve a person&#8217;s problem. You have to not be afraid to seize that opportunity when it does happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designer <a href=\"https:\/\/benbrushdesign.com\/\">Ben Brush<\/a> concurs with Patricia\u2019s theory:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKeep a meticulous calendar of your work. By doing this you are aware of holes in the schedule before you&#8217;re in them. Knowing your availability down to the hour lets you maximize booking and stops you from turning down work you need later, just because you feel busy now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Focus on recurring revenue &amp; repeat business<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, simply booking <em>more<\/em> clients isn\u2019t the only way to guarantee you\u2019ll have income for months to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many freelancers who grow tired of finding new clients every month in a never-ending sales cycle decide to lean into a <a href=\"https:\/\/millo.co\/recurring-revenue-and-retainer-based-clients\">recurring model<\/a> instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Leverage the power of retainers<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve watched my friend <a href=\"https:\/\/businessbitch.com\/\">Chelsea Baldwin<\/a> do this exceptionally well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy favorite way to keep a full client pool,\u201d she has told me,&nbsp; \u201cis to sign people onto smaller retainers once I finish a big project for them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor example, if I created a full email marketing funnel for a client, I&#8217;ll offer them an add-on retainer at the end of the project to keep an eye on the funnel&#8217;s data. I\u2019ll implement changes for improvements where necessary.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese retainers usually cost less than the initial project, but they provide on-going value &amp; they&#8217;re easy for a client to say yes to.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce you get a handful of these on-going retainers in place, you don&#8217;t have to worry about the feast-or-famine cycle anymore, because you have a baseline of income you can rely on each month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.creativerevolt.com\/\">Jorden Makelle<\/a> has a similar approach in her business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her advice is to \u201dfocus on landing ongoing retainer clients who can actually afford to pay well! You can package your services \u2026 and have the client sign a retainer <a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.reliablepenguin.com\/online-contract\">online contract<\/a>. This way, you feel secure knowing you&#8217;ve got cash coming in every month!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Focus on over-delivering for your clients<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>While it may prove successful for you (as it has for Chelsea and Jorden) you don\u2019t have to pitch a <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/guide-to-retainer-agreements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"retainer agreement\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">retainer agreement<\/a> to your clients in order to have repeat business every month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My good friend <a href=\"https:\/\/andyconlin.com\">Andy Conlin<\/a> focuses on giving his clients the best experience possible\u2014and attributes this effort to his growing business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDo the kind of work\u2014and be the kind of freelancer\u2014that people will keep coming back for. Skilled, thorough, and excited about what you do. Once people see what you&#8217;re capable of, they&#8217;ll be happy to return or refer others to you. Be proactive in finding additional ways you can help them. These are strategies that have served me well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s not alone in this long-term, genuine business strategy either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blaesingdesign.com\">Rebecca Blaesing<\/a> advises, \u201cTreat every client with respect, and be very responsive and clear in communication. At the end of every project, I want my clients to feel like I am truly invested in working with them. Happy clients return, and they become walking testimonials for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consultant <a href=\"https:\/\/rhondapage.com\">Rhonda Page<\/a> feels the same way. For her, <a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/5-ways-to-lock-down-client-loyalty-after-your-services\">client loyalty<\/a> is critical to a freelancer\u2019s success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecome a strategic partner to your clients. It\u2019s harder than ever to stand out and get client loyalty. Keep clients keep coming back again and again by understanding more about their business and caring as much about it as if it was your own.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The one tactic we\u2019d all agree on<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning from these expert freelancers and entrepreneurs was motivating and inspiring for me\u2014and I hope it was for you too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t have to reach back out to all of my friends who shared their advice in this article to know one thing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s one tactic each and every one of them (and I) would say is crucial in your journey to becoming a sustainable freelancer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reading today\u2019s article might have inspired you.
