My family has just wrapped up week two of homeschooling and it\u2019s almost beginning to feel like the new normal! We\u2019ve just been notified that schools in our district are officially closed until at least May, but most likely we\u2019re looking at August according to our state governor. My wife is a small business owner like many of you and I work full time for HoneyBook, so it\u2019s hard to resist the temptation of simply handing a device to our 7-year old (Jack, pictured above having entertained himself last weekend with a Sharpie pen!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re still reading this then you\u2019ve already been figuring out what works best for your family and every working parent has their own unique situation, so the last thing I want to do is write a blog that in any way feels like I\u2019m telling anyone how to parent their own kids. My wife and I know that we have it easy compared to many families right now – we only have one child, we have a small backyard and our jobs are flexible enough that we can spend some time making sure Jack still has a routine and some structure to his learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the main purpose of this blog is simply to provide a list of resources that you may find valuable. The only pieces of advice I will share based on our experience so far are these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. Try and get your kids into a routine as close to their regular school schedule as possible including prescribed \u2018recess\u2019 time when they can simply play. Since we all know that our kids rule the roost, this in turn helps you create a work routine and be more productive. For us this means homeschool is out at 3:15 so Jack still has lots of time to do whatever he wants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Shake those sillies out and be sure you find ways to keep them moving and burning energy – you\u2019ll be grateful come bedtime. See the physical activity section below for inspiration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Be flexible – for everyone\u2019s sake, don\u2019t pick fights with your kids. We\u2019re experiencing a time of high anxiety for most people so the mental health of your kids and everyone in your house is more important than anything else. Once back in the classroom, professionally trained teachers will soon get students back on track academically.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    These are the pillars from which we\u2019ve established a balance of learning and entertainment in our household, while remaining somewhat sane. But again, I understand that every family faces a different set of circumstances. The following resources are skewed towards elementary school kids but there are plenty of resources for kids of all ages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Educational Printables<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Education.com<\/strong><\/a> and Greatschools.org<\/strong><\/a> have a large quantity of free printable worksheets by topic and grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Physical & Mindfulness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Go Noodle<\/strong> <\/a>– a fun collection of videos that promote movement and mindfulness – we do this with Jack every morning before homeschool starts and everyone loves it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Cosmic Kids:<\/strong> <\/a>Yoga-based storytelling including themes like Pokemon, Star Wars and Frozen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Kids Tabata<\/strong><\/a> – mini workouts with kid themes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    PE with Joe<\/strong> <\/a>– UK based trainer who has put together exercise programs for kids<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    KIDZBOP<\/strong><\/a> helps kids work on their dance moves!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Arts & Crafts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    At home art classes from Totally The Bomb<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Skillshare<\/strong><\/a> offers scheduled art classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Lunch Doodles with Mo Willems<\/strong>!<\/a> where your kids can learn to draw their favorite book characters <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Art For Kids Hub<\/strong><\/a> – a new art project every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Science & Math<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Science Kids<\/strong><\/a>: <\/strong>A tremendous resource for games, lessons and videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Cool Math Games<\/strong><\/a>: The name says it all\u2026..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Maths Factor<\/strong><\/a> – math lessons and games for 4-12 year olds<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Audible<\/strong><\/a> is offering free kid\u2019s book downloads<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What Do We Do All Day <\/strong><\/a>– <\/strong>is a great site for activities, including educational games and activities including cards and dice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Lego Marble Maze<\/strong><\/a>  – a fun lego challenge for elementary kids <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    30 Day Lego Challenge<\/strong><\/a> – <\/strong>not only are these fun to play, but incorporate numbers and math.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Yahtzee<\/strong> <\/a>– if you have five dice you can download the scoresheet sheet here<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Pig <\/strong><\/a>– all you need is a dice, great for kid\u2019s math skills and fun for the whole family<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Virtual Tours<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Google Earth<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>has virtual tours of 31 National Parks in the US<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Riding virtual rides at Disneyland <\/strong>on Youtube<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Natural History <\/strong><\/a>– Virtually going to museums. For Natural History buffs, the Smithsonian is a must see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Educational Screen Time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Home School Hideout <\/strong>has provided over 100 educational show on both <\/strong>Netflix<\/strong><\/a> and <\/strong>Hulu. <\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There will be times when the TV or tablet will need to fill in as babysitter, and that\u2019s just fine – we all have to do what we need to do to keep things sane and safe!
