We worry about coming across as too aggressive in our marketing. We don\u2019t want to feel annoying or pushy.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, sell we must. That is, if we want to make a living.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The question then becomes: How do we sell our services in our marketing without<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seeming (or feeling) salesy?<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a copywriter for creative entrepreneurs, I\u2019ve unearthed the secrets to selling without a hint of sleazy sales tactics.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s all about building a brand that\u2019s earnest. A brand that stretches beyond what you\u2019re \u201cselling\u201d and encompasses your vision and value.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s look closer at how to sell without the sleaze.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>To sell your services, don\u2019t \u201csell,\u201d empathize.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In college, I worked as a commission-based sales associate at an upscale intimates boutique. Like a salesperson at a car dealership, I was expected to sell the most expensive pieces in the store and convince customers to keep adding to their totals.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first, I was terrible at this job. I\u2019m a quiet and serious person. By no stretch of the imagination would I have been considered the \u201csalesperson\u201d type.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And when I tried to copy the tactics I saw my coworkers using with success, it came across as disingenuous and, yes, a little slimy.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I couldn\u2019t fake my way to a boisterous sales pitch.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I gave up. I decided to forget about the commission and resolved to take home my base pay and nothing more.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The strange thing was that after dropping my salesperson persona, I began to see customers as the individuals they were, instead of as \u201ctargets.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, I stopped feeling nervous about how I was coming across. (Am I confident enough? Cheery enough?) And I let my empathic nature take over.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The women who shopped at the store were vulnerable, looking for a bra that would <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finally<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fit them well. Other times, they were shopping for something that would make them feel sexy for their wedding night, or anniversary, or for the first time after losing 50 pounds.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I listened. I cared. I repeated their concerns back to them in a validating way. I helped them feel good about their purchasing decisions. I suggested pieces that I knew would help them achieve what they wanted.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They felt seen, not sold to. And I felt like I\u2019d served<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">them, rather than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sold <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only was I more successful at selling higher-priced pieces (almost without even trying), but I also felt aligned with my true self.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to sell with empathy in marketing and copywriting<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the same approach you should take in your marketing and copywriting. I\u2019ve laid out the steps to make it easier to remember:<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forget about making the sale. Forget about being likable or confident or upbeat. (What a relief!)<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Listen to what your potential clients are saying they want or need or struggle with. Feel their pain in your gut. Try to let go of yourself and radically empathize.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With deep understanding, repeat their pains back to them to validate what they\u2019ve been struggling with. Use the same phrases they\u2019ve used. Strive to make them feel seen.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, show them how you can help take that pain away. Offer it with kindness. Believe that in sharing with them how you can help, you\u2019re helping them leave behind those struggles.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can use this framework in writing on your website, in an Instagram caption, during a sales call and even in your proposals.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Pro tip:<\/strong> Use<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.reliablepenguin.com\/invites?code=hbforrts%3F&amp;utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=content&amp;utm_campaign=krista-walsh-empathy\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HoneyBook to craft proposals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in this framework and then immediately send prospects to your <a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.reliablepenguin.com\/online-contract\">online contract<\/a> and then the invoice.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psst. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a version of the classic copywriting framework<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/copywritematters.com\/paso-copywriting-formula\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P-A-S: Pain\/Problem, Agitate,\u00a0Solution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1 | Give more than you sell<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the only time you talk to your customers is when you\u2019re asking for a sale, then it\u2019s likely they <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> perceive you as salesy. Yikes.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Instead, <\/strong><\/span><b><strong>give<\/strong><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> more than you sell:<\/strong> Make<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kristawalshcopywriter.com\/content-marketing\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generous content<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the core of your marketing strategy.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you give away information and insights for free, a few important things happen:<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your audience begins to trust you as someone who wants to help, not just make a quick buck.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your audience begins to be convinced that you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">someone who can help&#8211;that you know what you\u2019re talking about.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your audience sees how much you care about your craft because you\u2019re consistently sharing about it. Even when you have no \u201cend game\u201d of selling a program or service. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to make copywriting for content creation easier\u00a0<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, creating lots of free content can be time-consuming. That\u2019s why I suggest using the following strategy to cut back on the time spent creating and get the most mileage out of your content:<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose your \u201ccore\u201d platform. This is the platform you will create each piece of content for first. For me, it\u2019s my blog, because writing is what comes most easily to me. For you, it might be your YouTube channel, Instagram, email list, or podcast.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a top-quality piece of content. It should be original, in-depth and well-crafted. This is where you should spend the most time.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Break your piece of content into smaller chunks to re-use on your other platforms. For example, I divide each blog post I write into 10 social media posts for Instagram and Facebook and two email newsletters.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the end of the month, you\u2019ve shown up consistently on all your platforms with generous free content to help establish you as someone who gives more than you sell.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, when you do ask for a sale, your audience will be delighted to buy from you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2 | Nurture leads over time<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pause for a moment and conjure a memory of an unpleasant sales experience. One where you felt like a walking bank account to the salesperson rather than a human being.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What did you think of?<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I immediately thought of telemarketers.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experiences with telemarketers are famously unpleasant. And the reason is that their goal is to close the deal with you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right then<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Over the phone, without ever having spoken to you before.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can avoid this telemarketer sleaze by nurturing your leads instead of trying to close the deal right away.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nurturing leads is the process of gently marketing to them for weeks or even months before finally asking for the big sale.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marketer<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/storybrand.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donald Miller<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> likes to use the analogy of dating to explain this concept. You can\u2019t run up to someone you\u2019ve never met and ask them to marry you. They\u2019ll feel frightened or offended and run away. Instead, you have to ask for smaller yesses first, like asking for their phone number. Then, you ask them on a first date, then a second\u2026 and eventually, you ask them to marry you. And they say yes! With joy!<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, make sure you\u2019re not asking new leads to \u201cmarry you\u201d right away. Instead, create a marketing process that starts with a very small yes and slowly builds over time to the Big Question: Will you buy from me?<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For me, this first small ask is to follow me on Instagram. Then, I ask for an email address to join my email list. Eventually, I\u2019ll suggest they schedule a 1:1 call using the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.reliablepenguin.com\/invites?code=hbforrts%3F&amp;utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=content&amp;utm_campaign=krista-walsh-empathy\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HoneyBook Scheduler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And after one or two of those calls, I ask for the sale.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3 | Avoid feeling salesy by aiming for a brand voice of empathy and generosity<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I felt such resistance to the idea of \u201cselling\u201d and even \u201cmarketing\u201d for a long time. It made me feel icky, like a swindler or a beggar asking people to give me their money.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But all that resistance?
